Tactile mnemonics of the passenger terminal and adjacent territory have been set up at Gagarin international airport (part of the Airports of Regions holding) for low mobility passengers. These mnemonic maps can be found in the territory of the parking facility, at the entrance to the terminal as well as at the exit fr om the airport building. A tactile mnemonic represents a map of the terminal with indication of optimal routes, wh ere inscriptions are duplicated in the Braille script.
The mnemonics at Gagarin airport will be a source of information for people with disabilities, augmenting the already available means of support for this passenger category. Thus staff call buttons are available at the terminal: specially trained employees will then help and support low mobility flyers at all stages of their travel over the passenger terminal. Also functioning in the passenger terminal are stationary and portable hearing (audio) loops allowing a passenger with hearing disabilities to comfortably communicate with the airport staff and to perceive audio messages. Tactile indicators with an antiskid surface as well as contrasting tactile strips on the steps of staircases, performing the alert and antiskid functions, are also installed in the terminal building.
Elevators installed in the passenger terminal of Gagarin airport ensure uninterrupted access of passengers to all levels of the three-storey building, whereas a special device called ambulift is used to facilitate convenient and safe boarding and unloading of flyers on wheeled chairs.
